PREVIEW – WRC 2 IN MEXICO

Hyundai Motorsport boss Andrea Adamo has called on his WRC 2 drivers to raise their game at this week’s Rally Guanajuato Mexico (12 - 15 March).



His squad lies third in the teams’ standings after the opening two rounds. Nikolay Gryazin (above) holds third in the drivers’ points with Ole Christian Veiby two places further back and Adamo wants to see his team net its first win of the season.

“We expect our two WRC 2 crews to make a step forward in performance in Mexico, even if it will be new experience for them. There’s no question it is a challenging event, but that’s what the WRC is all about, and why we are here,” he said.

Both drivers make their Mexican debuts, although Veiby recced the special stages in 2017 and 2018. The Norwegian benefits from the advice of co-driver Jonas Andersson, who has competed nine times previously.

“The altitude is going to be a challenge. Jonas has already warned me it will zap the power out of the engine. The thinner air will also affect the body, so it will be important to stay hydrated. We want to build on the good result we had in Sweden. For Mexico, victory is the target,” he said.

Mads Østberg leads the standings with an unblemished record after wins in Monte-Carlo and Sweden. The Norwegian misses Mexico but his lead is such that he will retain top spot irrespective of this weekend’s outcome.

Hyundai’s duo will be challenged by Pontus Tidemand, who finished third on his only appearance to date in Sweden in a Skoda Fabia. He won WRC 2 in Mexico in 2017 and 2018 and warmed up with a test on Monday.

“This is a fun event with lots of happy and enthusiastic spectators that create an amazing atmosphere. The roads are demanding but really cool to drive and I like the format with long and short stages and the challenge of getting the most out of the car on such high altitude,” said the Swede. วิเคราะห์บอล

PRODRIVE COMPLETES VIRUS VENTILATOR

Multiple WRC-winning preparation firm Prodrive has delivered a production-ready ventilator to help in the global fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The team which delivered world titles in Subarus for Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Petter Solberg answered the call from the British government for engineering companies to help in the design and build of equipment to assist in hospitals.

Working with Cambridge University’s Whittle Laboratory, Prodrive developed a low-cost Open Ventilator System Initiative (OVSI) unit to be produced using components from outside the medical supply chain to ensure it reaches the market quickly and in high production volumes required.

Twenty engineers in Prodrive’s base at Banbury in the UK have been working on the project seven days a week since April. That work includes the design of the ventilator’s electrical system and software to control and ease the use in an intensive care environment.

Prodrive chairman David Richards said: “I am particularly proud of how our team, who had no previous medical experience, gave their time freely and brought this project to fruition in record time.

These are just two of the fantastic rally-themed lots that WRC fans can bid for in an online auction to raise money for the global fight against Covid-19.

A racesuit worn by nine-time world champion Sébastien Loeb and World Rally Car rear wings from a Hyundai i20 and Citroën C3 also feature in the special auction.

Also up for grabs are an Anonimo Militare Chrono WRC watch worn by Kalle Rovanperä, the winners’ champagne bottle from last year’s Shell Helix Rally Estonia signed by world champions Ott Tänak and Martin Järveoja and a host of Toyota Gazoo Racing items.

The #RaceAgainstCovid auction features 95 items donated by some of motorsport’s biggest stars and teams. All proceeds will go to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) response to the pandemic.

The auction is organised by the FIA and the FIA Foundation has kick-started the fundraising with a 1 million euro donation to the IFRC.

Bidding remains open on the RM Sotheby’s website here until Monday 22 June.
