WRC+ FOCUS: A NEW DECADE AND TIME FOR A CHANGE

By the middle of the 2000 WRC season, it was clearly beginning to emerge that a new world champion was set to be crowned. But as this week’s WRC+ Focus reveals, it was perhaps not the driver most people had expected.

In his second full season with Subaru, British hopeful Richard Burns began the 2000 season at a blistering pace, with three victories and a second-place finish in the first six rallies of the year. The handing over of the drivers’ championship trophy to Burns at season end was beginning to look like a given.

But at the same time, there was a Finnish driver with a certain amount of faith to repay, with 2000 marking the first time that Marcus Grönholm had received a seat for a full season, earning it with Peugeot.

Starting the season ominously with a retirement in his first-ever trip to Monte-Carlo, Grönholm reversed his fortunes the next month in Sweden, claiming his maiden WRC win, before following it up with a string of good results.

When Burns’ fortunes began to change mid-season, Grönholm was in the perfect position to pounce, meaning that, when the WRC rolled into Cardiff in late November for the final event of the season, it was still anyone’s guess as to who would be crowned the new world champion.
